Acute Injuries

Although they usually are associated with older individuals, overuse injuries can occur with adolescents as well. Pain and reduced function can develop over time as a result of repetitive motion, such as throwing a ball, swinging a bat, and swimming. Gymnasts are particularly prone to wrist and elbow concerns. Overuse injuries typically present as stress fractures, strained ligaments and muscles, and similar problems.

Growth Plate Injuries

Throughout adolescence, bones grow by developing soft cartilage at the ends that eventually harden and turn to bone. While still soft, these areas are more prone to damage due to sports injuries, which could in turn lead to bone deformities or other growth problems. Contact and high impact sports present the greatest risk, although any activity could be the cause of growth plate injuries.
